The Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) has identified a Russian serviceman involved in the execution of a captured Ukrainian border guard in the Sumy region. The suspect was captured by Ukrainian forces the following day.
The detainee, Ivan Khamgushkeev, known by the call sign “Buryat,” served as a senior rifleman in the 2nd Company of the 5th Battalion of Russia’s 810th Independent Marine Brigade of the Black Sea Fleet.
According to investigators, on June 18, 2025, Khamgushkeev took part in an assault on Ukrainian Defense Forces positions near the village of Myropillya in the Sumy region. During the fighting, a serviceman of Ukraine’s State Border Guard Service was taken prisoner.
The SBU said the captive was interrogated and later executed at close range with Kalashnikov assault rifles.
“Buryat and his accomplice shot the prisoner at point-blank range and reported the killing to their commander via radio,” the agency said. The border guard died at the scene.
Ukrainian forces counterattacked the next day, capturing Khamgushkeev as one of the few surviving members of the assault group.
On June 28, Ukraine’s Air Assault Forces released a video in which Khamgushkeev admits to taking part in the execution.
“The commander ordered us to kill him. I fired first, hitting his arm. He crouched down, and another soldier finished him off with a burst,” he said in the footage.
The SBU stated that while in custody, Khamgushkeev attempted to deny his involvement. Investigators say they have gathered sufficient evidence and have served him with a notice of suspicion under Part 2 of Article 438 of Ukraine’s Criminal Code (violation of the laws and customs of war resulting in death).
The captured serviceman faces life imprisonment if convicted, similar to other Russians — Dmitry Kurashov and Sergei Tuzhilov — who were also involved in the executions of Ukrainian prisoners of war.
